How Safe are Dental Implants?

How Safe are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are generally considered to be a very safe tooth replacement option. There are several reasons why they have such a stellar reputation.

One of the reasons is that they are typically made of titanium. The metal titanium is highly biocompatible, with extremely low levels of rejection. Titanium is also able to osseointegrate with bone tissue. The reason that is important is because in so doing, it keeps the jawbone stimulated in much the same way as a natural tooth root. When a tooth goes missing, the natural reaction that the body has is to start reabsorbing that part of the jawbone back into the body. A dental implant is the only tooth replacement option able to prevent that bone loss from occurring, because of the stimulation that it provides to the jawbone.

The procedure to place the implants has a very high success rate, and is generally viewed as one of the safest and more predictable procedures in dentistry. The implant itself is also built to last, and in fact, it is designed to last the entire lifetime of the patient. Other tooth replacement options such as a dental bridge have a life expectancy just over 10 years. And oral health is simple with a dental implant, as the maintenance that a titanium implant requires is very similar to your natural teeth. Brushing and flossing, along with visiting the dentist every six months are all that is required in order to keep your implant in optimum shape.
